Gondar is an ancient historical city in northern Ethiopia. Emperor Fasilides founded this royal city in 1635 and it was the capital of Ethiopia for more than two centuries. It is known for the impressive castles built during that time.
Mama Wesene is a joyful and steady woman who has a strong and kind personality. She brought her two boys, Abel and Fasika with her when she became a Selamta mom at Gondar. She has a warm laugh and is incredibly hospitable when guests visit her home. She loves to cook, knit, and spend time with her kids.
Addisu is an easy going and friendly young man. He was one of the first kids to join Selamta in 2006. His biological siblings were accepted in a different children’s home, but he was too old to join. Selamta was unable to reunite the siblings, but Addisu is able to visit his younger siblings frequently at their home. Addisu is a Selamta star soccer goalie.
Mikias and his younger brother, Bilal came to Selamta early on in 2006 when the first Children’s Center opened. Mikias likes singing and from his arrival, he started performing in Selamta Idol talent shows. He is a young man who likes working with his hands. After learning the basics of woodworking in Selamta’s workshop, he gained employment in a local shop.
Endrias is a talented artist. He started drawing and painting when he came to Selamta in 2006. During the summer months he attends art school or practices painting in his home. He is a quiet, introspective young man. After living at Selamta for several years, his sister was located in 2013, and Emuye became a part of the Gondar family.
Bilal is a gregarious boy who loves to play games and spend time with friends. He is creative, sociable, and clever. Bilal loves loves playing soccer on the Selamta team, and take the commitment seriously. He is also a member of Selamta's Extracurricular Activity Committee.
Tigist is a quiet and reserved young lady who likes making friendship bracelets, reading, and spending time with friends. She is reserved, but friendly and very sweet. Her sisters are always by her side, and she is a responsible member of her family, always willing to help their mother prepare food or coffee. The meaning of Tigist in Amharic is “patience.”
izita is a confident young lady who enjoys acting and reading. She likes to write her own plays and stories. A film director saw Tizita act at a summer theater camp in Addis Ababa and she was chosen to play a leading role in a film, called Difret. Her English is excellent and she often helps volunteers as an informal translator. She particularly enjoys assisting our volunteers, as they facilitate English Summer Camp in the summertime.
Emuye is Endrias’ biological sister. The two of them were reunited in 2013 after many years of being apart. Endrias was thrilled when Emuye joined the Selamta Family. Prior to joining Selamta, Emuye was living in the countryside of Ethiopia with relatives who struggled to care for her and Endrias was worried she would have to stop going to school and get married. She is a bright girl who is thrilled to be able to continue her education now that she is at Selamta. She likes making friendship bracelets, jumping-rope and preparing the traditional coffee ceremony when guests come to her house.
Abel is Mama Wesene’s biological child and a playful, vivacious boy. He loves playing sports and had a blast learning how to play lacrosse with past volunteers. He is intelligent and works hard in school. He has been at the top of his class several years in a row. He laughs easily and often.
Yohannes loves learning and is very studious. He is a quiet, kind-natured boy who likes making things. Yohannes enjoys painting and making tie dye t-shirts with volunteers. He spends a lot of time playing with his Selamta brothers, Fasika and Abel, and tempers their energy a bit.
Fasika is Abel’s younger brother and is a harmlessly mischievous, funny, and adventuresome young boy. He likes acting silly and joking around with his Selamta buddies. There are three other boys who are his age and they have a blast together.
